Show garden relocated to Addenbrooke's Hospital is taking shape
An award-nominated show garden will be recreated at Addenbrooke's.
Max Harriman, an assistant designer at Bowles & Wyer, had his garden on display at this year’s Tatton Flower Show.
Calm in Chaos was presented as part of the 10th annual RHS Young Garden Designer of the Year competition – in which Max was one of five finalists all 28 years old and under.
Max, 26, said: “It’s being slightly altered to incorporate more seating areas, but also to be accessible to wheelchairs and more members of the public.
“But all the components of the garden, including the trees, the plants and the timber posts, have all been transported to Cambridge and will be part of the final garden.”
The garden will occupy a space previously inhabited solely by grass and trees, though the trees will remain.
“Bowles & Wyer have done four courtyard gardens for the hospital – for Addenbrooke’s Trust – already,” said Max, “so we’ve got a very good working relationship with the trust and they were over the moon to accept the relocation.”
The garden – the first Max has been involved with in Cambridge – is close to completion but there is no exact date for it as of yet.
“The concept for the show garden was about the importance of green space,” notes Max, “and the garden was designed to maximise the restorative benefits associated with green space. It’s really nice that it’s been relocated, and it fits into that initial concept.”
