Nine smokers have been prosecuted by Cambridge City Council for dropping cigarette butts in the street.

The council said each of them was taken to magistrates’ court – and found guilty – after they failed to pay a fixed penalty notice.

The prosecutions, which took place in May, July and August, but were released by the council on Tuesday (September 10), and included:

  • Emily Grief of Minerva Way, Cambridge;
  • Charles Delafeld of Crown Walk, St Ives;
  • Thomas Cchomlafe of Histon Road, Cambridge;
  • Christian Binta, of Hazelwood Close, Cambridge;
  • Steph Burns, of Ravensworth Gardens, Cambridge;
  • Paulo Graziani, of Wycliffe Road, Cambridge;
  • Sharon Day, of Ashfield Road Cambridge;
  • Kim Noakes, of Rutheford Close, Uxbridge; and
  • Tracey Smith, of Spinney Way, Needingworth.

Each was fined £220 and ordered to pay between £150 and £220 costs and a victim surcharge of £30.

Cllr Rosy Moore, executive councillor for climate change, environment and city centre, said: “We know that the majority of residents want our city to be kept as clean as possible and that we take very seriously all levels of environmental crime.

“Cigarette butts may be small but they are made of a form of plastic which takes up to 10 years to degrade.”
