St Paul’s C of E Primary School pupils launch new school newspaper – The Epistle

Eleven children from Years 5 and 6 at St Paul’s C of E Primary school in Cambridge worked on the inaugural edition of The Epistle, the school’s newspaper, which was handed out to children and teachers.

The children interviewed one of the school’s new teachers, the school librarian, and their fellow pupils, and also wrote articles on subjects including science.

Denise Roland, a parent and one of the organisers of the club – and a journalist herself – said: “It started last term, in January, and ran throughout the spring term.

“The children came up with story ideas and pursued them. They interviewed their fellow pupils and teachers, we had an advice column and all sorts of articles.”

Denise, who revealed that the children went about their business wearing ‘press’ lanyards, noted that more pupils will be invited to join the paper this term.

“The children are thinking of interviewing people outside the school as well,” she said. “Maybe they could approach the local MP, children’s authors, people like that.”

The paper was sponsored by Cambridge bakery Maison Clement – its donation paid for the printing – and one child designed the advertisement.
