The buses will be ready to serve the new station as soon as trains start arriving.

With thousands of commuters expected to flood the north of Cambridge in May, and more than 10,000 new homes set to spring up in Northstowe and the district’s other satellite villages, Stagecoach has registered new bus services to deal with the expected demand.

Some things are on hold for the region’s bus provider, while City Deal drafts plans to tackle Cambridge’s congestion and the Combined Authority weighs up the options of new powers provided by the Bus Services Bill making its way through Parliament.

Andy Campbell, director of Stagecoach in Cambridgeshire, said: “10,000 new homes will definitely put even more pressure on the roads into Cambridge.

“To address this issue, we have already registered new bus services that will operate from Northstowe to the new station and the city centre from May 21.”

This start of additional bus services coincides with Greater Anglia’s expected start of services from the new Cambridge North railway station on May 21.

Northstowe, a new town creating some 10,000 homes on the guided busway roughly halfway between St Ives and Cambridge, could have its first residents move in later this year.

Phase one homes on the development have been built near the Longstanton Park & Ride for easy access to the guided busway, as well as the new primary school and local centre as it develops. Construction started in September, and these homes now have detailed consent and some are already being constructed and for sale.

Mr Campbell continued: “We intend to offer a 20-minute service from 7am to 7pm, with later journeys supported by the existing A service.

“In addition, the six extra buses that already operate on the guided busway, in response to soaring popularity during peak times, will also serve Cambridge North station.

“Full timetables will soon be available, and we will continue to monitor demand as the house-building programme develops.”
