Storm Ciara: M11 ‘likely to be closed until Wednesday’ say Highways England
Motorists are being urged to plan their morning commute as the M11 remains closed this evening (Sunday, February 9).
Part of the M11 and the A505 were closed earlier today near to Duxford Imperial War Museum due to high winds from Storm Ciara.
It is likely to be closed in both directions between junctions 9 and 11 until Wednesday after the roof of an aircraft hangar at the airfield was damaged in the wind and looked likely to be blown onto the motorway.
On Sunday evening Highways England said that there was a one-mile exclusion zone in place around the Imperial War Museum at Duxford.
It tweeted: “We have had to shut M11 J9 to J11 in both directions until @IWMDuxford can fix it. This is likely to be closed until Wednesday. Please avoid area.”
Cambridgeshire Constabulary said: “The M11 will continue to be closed overnight and most likely into the morning rush hour and beyond between junctions 9 and 11 both north and southbound. The A505 will also remain closed from the Whittlesford and Fowlmere approached to the M11.”
Diversions are in place via the A11 and A14 northbound and the A505 and A1301 southbound.
Residents in the local vicinity are being urged to stay indoors for risk of fallen debris and people are urged to stay away from the area unless absolutely necessary to visit, say police.
Disruption on Greater Anglia railway services could also continue on Monday.
