Storm Eunice: Wall collapses in Cambridge
A garage block wall collapsed in Cambridge as strong winds from Storm Eunice battered the city today (Friday, February 18).
Cambridge City Council officers will assess the remaining structure of the block in Staffordshire Street to see what action is needed.
One nearby resident told Cambridge Independent: “It had just turned 2pm and I heard a loud thump - not the usual bins falling over.
“So I looked out from my corner window in my flat in Staffordshire Street and immediately noticed the top wall had fallen.”
He added: “It looks like the wind blew the garage doors, enough to topple the ward.”
The resident said police and council officers soon arrived and a cordon was placed at the scene.
A Cambridge City Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of the situation at Staffordshire Street. Council staff are on site, have cordoned off the area affected, and are liaising with residents nearby. Building control officers are on their way to assess the structure of the building and determine what further action needs to be taken. The police are also aware of the situation and have attended the site.”
A police spokesperson said: “We were called at just after 2pm to Staffordshire Street, Cambridge with reports a wall had collapsed.
“Officers attended and the nearby footpath has been cordoned off for safety reasons. There is not believed to be anyone injured.”
The Met Office issued a red ‘danger to life’ warning for wind on Friday that included Cambridgeshire as one of the worst storms in decades hit the region.
The alert, which was issued at 3.44am and is the highest level, covered London, the South East and parts of the East of England from 10am to 3pm.
