The road was shut between junction 31 for the M11 and junction 21 for the Brampton Hut Interchange following the collision at 7.10pm on Tuesday night (June 1).

The crash involved two heavy goods vehicles, one of which lost its load and damaged the carriageway.

The westbound carriageway reopened at 1pm.

The Highways Agency said diversions were in place and drivers were urged to allow extra journey time and plan ahead as delays occurred.

Congestion built up on surrounding roads, including the A428.

The Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit said one driver was injured, but fortunately not seriously.

During the closure, Highways England advised drivers to follow the hollow square symbol on road signs:

  • From J31, travel westbound on the A428 to Wyboston
  • Then head northbound on the A1
  • At the Brampton Hut A1 Interchange take the first exit on the roundabout
  • Rejoin the A14 westbound at J21.
