Stunning shot captures Milky Way over Cambridge
This stunning image, showing the Milky Way over the streetlights of Cambridge, was taken by amateur astronomer Paul Haworth.
Based in Over, Paul’s interest in capturing the beauty of the night sky was stimulated by the appearance of Comet Neowise in July 2020.
He said: “One of the joys of nightscape photography is revealing things that often aren't visible to the naked eye, providing a new context to otherwise familiar landscapes.
“Usually I photograph the stars over dark parts of the countryside and particularly from the Fens, away from city lights. But the same stars are above us in our cities; they're just obscured by the glow from streetlights.
“So I set myself the challenge of capturing the Milky Way above the Cambridge skyline. The view from Castle Mound includes many familiar Cambridge landmarks and has the added advantage of being elevated and reasonably dark.
“To get this shot, which was taken with a regular DSLR camera. I combined 41 separate photographs, boosting the faint light from the Milky Way until it was distinct from the background sky glow.”
