Thieves leave Witchford residents without internet and landline phone access again
Thieves have again disrupted the broadband and phone network in Witchford, just weeks after their last attack.
Some villagers were without connectivity tonight (Monday, January 3) following an attack on a secure box, which Openreach said caused “significant damage”.
It follows the theft of cable from the village on the evening of December 15, which left 1,000 homes and businesses without internet and landline phone connections until the network could be restored - with most customers back online by December 17.
An Openreach spokesperson told the Cambridge Independent tonight: “We can confirm another attack on our network in the same vicinity as an earlier cable theft in December.
“On this occasion, the culprits have cut through a secure box, causing significant damage.
“We’re investigating and have made arrangements for engineers to be on site first thing tomorrow to start repairs.
“We’re very sorry for this loss of service and we’re working to get residents reconnected as quickly as possible.
“It’s really disappointing that local people are once again bearing the brunt of criminal behaviour. We’d ask anyone who noticed anything suspicious to contact the police.”
