Supporters unite in fundraising efforts

Football fans have raised £6,000 in a benefit match for Cambridge United fan Simon Dobbin.

The U’s supporter was left brain damaged after being attacked by Southend United supporters after a match between the two sides in March 2015.

United and Southend faced each other at the Cambs Glass Stadium at the end of July to raise money for Simon and his family.

Simon’s wife Nicole, daughter Emily and other members of the family received a standing ovation as they took to the field with Simon between a guard of honour, wearing half and half shirts, and the message on the back ‘United we stand against football violence’.

The proceeds from the game are to be donated towards Simon’s ongoing care needs, and Nicole said: “We would like to say a massive thank you to Cambridge United for hosting the charity match, and for the way we as a family were treated.

“We all had a fantastic time, as did Simon, who loves the club and still really enjoys watching the game.

“Also thank you to Southend United for taking part, and to both clubs for the shirts.

“Thank you to all the staff at Cambridge who made us feel so welcome and for the lovely food that was put on for us.

“Lastly a huge thank you to all the supporters and those that contributed towards the funds, well done everyone.

“Simon is currently having hyperbaric oxygen therapy and the funds are going towards this.”

Twelve people have been jailed for the attack on Simon.
