A new dual carriageway between Black Cat roundabout and Caxton Gibbet is to be delayed by Highways England.

The scheme was originally planned for 2019/2020 delivery. It will now be pushed back to 2021/22.

Highways England says this is because additional time is required to consider the findings of the A1 Strategic Study.

Lee Galloway, scheme lead, said: “We have announced today that main construction work on the upgrade is set to begin in the 2021/22 financial year, subject to statutory processes. This will benefits drivers by making sure we will not have roadworks on the A428 at the same time as the £1.5bn A14 upgrade, which is currently in construction and also means that the A428 upgrade can more fully address the progress and outputs of the government’s A1 East of England strategic study.

“We are grateful to the thousands of people who took part in our consultation last year and we plan to announce the results of the consultation, including the preferred route for the scheme, later in 2018.”
