Upgraded railway station path as part of cycling and pedestrian route is opened
A “vital link” between Melbourn and the railway station in neighbouring Meldreth has been upgraded to help those walking or cycling on the popular commuter route.
Pedestrians and cyclists will now benefit from a widened and newly-surfaced path, new parking areas for bikes and improved lighting.
The improvements make it safer to travel along the path, which runs through fields and under the A10 and connects those looking to commute to school and work with the station’s southern platform.
The work forms part of the Greater Cambridge Partnership’s Melbourn greenway, which aims to enable safer and easier travel for Melbourn, Meldreth, Shepreth, Foxton and Hauxton.
GCP chair Cllr Elisa Meschini (Lab, King’s Hedges) said: “Considerable work has gone into making this popular route safer and more accessible.
“We are thrilled to have delivered a wider, smoother and better lit path which will help make everyday journeys much more enjoyable for those walking and cycling to and from the station year round.”
Cambridgeshire county councillor Susan van de Ven (Lib Dem, Melbourn and Bassingbourn) added: “I’m delighted to see this much improved route now reopened to the public. It’s a vital community link for people who get around without a car, and for Meldreth station users who live, study or work in Melbourn.
“New lighting will make this a much more attractive route, as will cycle parking. Together with hundreds of other daily users, I look forward to getting back on the path.
“Thanks to all for their patience during the construction period, and to the team who made it happen.”
The early works for the Foxton section of the greenway have been paused while the GCP reviews the designs, considering local feedback.
