Watch as 22-year-old in Cambridge is first to be caught in Cambridgeshire police’s festive drink-drive crackdown

A 22-year-old woman was the first person to be caught during Cambridgeshire police’s festive drink-drive campaign.

Officers from the road policing unit carried out random breath tests along Elizabeth Way in Cambridge last Friday (6 December) evening when they stopped a Toyota Yaris.

The driver, Lydia Solon, of White Hart Court, St Ives, admitted having a drink two hours previously and gave a roadside breath test of 58 microgrammes. The legal limit is 35.

Police dashcam footage shows Solon telling officers: “I only had the one, I promise.”

She was arrested and taken into custody where she provided an evidential sample of 43 microgrammes.

Magistrates disqualified Solon from driving for a year and she must pay a £438 fine after pleading guilty to drink driving.

PC Sam Butler, from the road policing unit, said: “As part of our Christmas drink- and drug-drive campaign we carry out random spot checks across the county. There is no excuse for drink-driving. It puts your life, the life of your passengers and other road users at risk.

“While we can’t be everywhere, we could be anywhere, so this is a reminder to ask yourself whether getting behind the wheel is really worth the risk?”

Police operate a confidential hotline - 0800 032 0845 - which is available 24/7 for people to report drink and drug-drivers.
