Watch bodyworn camera footage as drug dealer is pursued in Ely, falls to ground and is arrested
Footage has been released of police catching a drug dealer who fled from them in Ely.
Officers were on patrol on 18 May when they spotted suspicious activity involving a black Kia.
Following a short pursuit, the driver, Naim Mehmetaj, stopped on Columbine Road and ran towards Abbots Way.
The footage, on an officer’s body-worn camera, shows him fleeing on foot as an officer in pursuit shouts at him: “Police with a Taser - your choice!”
Mehmetaj appears to stumble and fall to the ground, where he is arrested.
A sock containing £230 in cash and 22 bags of cocaine falls out of his pocket.
Mehmetaj, 29, of no fixed address, was sentenced at Peterborough Crown Court on Thursday (29 August) to 20 months in prison after pleading guilty to possession with intent to supply cocaine.
Det Con Christian Jackman, who investigated, said: “Tackling drug dealing continues to be a priority across the force because of the associated violence, theft and misery it brings to our communities.
“Mehmetaj was so eager to get away from our officers that he left his vehicle running and failed to put the hand brake on. Luckily, Ely officers kept pursuing him on foot and eventually detained him.
“The car rolled into a nearby property and fortunately it didn’t cause any significant damage.
“We will continue to work to disrupt drug dealing across East Cambridgeshire but information from the public can greatly assist with this.”
