Watch live as planners decide whether Waterbeach incinerator can go ahead
£200m energy from waste facility has prompted widespread opposition
More than 30 objectors are due to speak as plans for the Waterbeach incinerator are determined by county council’s planning committee today.
The meeting, which can be watched live online, will determine whether AmeyCespa can build the energy-from-waste facilty at Levitt’s Field, on Waterbeach Waste Management Park, off Ely Road.
The £200million facility would treat up to 250,000 tonnes of waste per year and provide electricity for 60,000 homes.
But campaigners are fearful of the emissions from the chimney stack and suggest the carbon emissions have been dramatically under-estimated.
There is also concern over the visual impact of the 80-metre chimney near to sensitive sites like Denny Abbey and close to where a new town is due to be built.
The site lies west of the A10 and just 500 metres north of Cambridge Research Park.
Despite the widespread opposition, planning officers have recommended that councillors approve the application.
