Watch the livestream as moonflower blooms at Cambridge University Botanic Garden

The Moonflower at Cambridge University Botanic Garden (CUBG) has bloomed once again.

A spokesperson from the garden told the Cambridge Independent on Thursday afternoon (1 February) that the flower “started to open around 1.30pm and is almost fully open now but not quite”.

The garden has set up a live webcam, which can be viewed below.

In the wild the Strophocactus wittii (Amazon Moonflower) opens at sunset and is over by sunrise. The previous flowerings at CUBG have taken place in the late afternoon.

The Moonflower is very rare in cultivation and CUBG was the first botanic garden in the UK to see one bloom in 2021.

This year, the staff are excited to have four buds, which the general public have called a ‘lunation’!
