What is causing delays on the A14 this morning?

Drivers on the A14 are facing severe delays this morning with travel times increased by around an hour.

It's the opening day of the new 12 mile A14 bypass, which runs between Swavesey and Ellington with drivers having to navigate a new road layout.

There is also much heavier than usual traffic and queues of up to 11 miles on the A14 westbound to J32 for the B1049 Cambridge Road/Histon interchange. Congestion was reported to reach all the way back to J37 at the Exning/Soham turn-off.

An earlier accidenton the A14 between J32 at Histon and J31, M11, Girton, was also adding to delays, although this is now reported to be cleared. And one lane was closed for emergency drainworks.

Highways England said: “We’re aware there are some issues with traffic building up in some areas. We expect it to take a while for drivers to get used to their new journeys and thank you for your ongoing patience.”

Shoppers are also struggling to escape the traffic because the Trumpington Park and Ride is full, meaning many people will have to battle their way into the city to park.
