Elderly woman dies in horrific minibus collision in Cambridgeshire




A woman has died and two other passengers are in a critical condition following a minibus collision near Bluntisham on November 14 which required the attendance of the Magpas Air Ambulance.

A further 10 passengers remain in hospital with serious injuries following the accident which happened as the minibus was believed to have been on its return journey from a trip to Ely Christmas market.

Police were called at about 4.50pm with reports of a collision involving a white Mercedes minibus and a black Volkswagen Golf on the B1040 Somersham Road, at its junction with Bluntisham Heath Road.

Emergency services attended, but despite their best efforts, one woman, aged in her 80s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A total of 18 passengers from the minibus, all aged between 60 and 80, were taken to hospital and an update from Cambridgeshire police confirmed two people are in a critical condition and a further 10 remain in hospital with serious injuries, including the driver of the Volkswagen – a man in his 70s.

Magpas Doctor Saad Jawaid, Critical Care Paramedic Steve Chambers and Doctor Simon Lewis arrived at the scene via a Magpas Air Ambulance rapid response vehicle at 5:10pm, and were the first medical resource on scene. The medical team declared it a critical incident and worked alongside the Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue to extricate and assess the patients, and utilised their specialist knowledge and skills to help manage the impact of the serious collision.

Approximately 18 people were injured in the collision and were transported to Addenbrooke’s Hospital or Hinchingbrooke Hospital via land ambulance.

A spokesperson for Magpas said: “One patient was sadly pronounced dead at the scene, our thoughts are with their family and friends at this time, and with all those involved in last night’s incident.”

Around 25 firefighters from Cambridge, Cottenham, Ely, Chatteris and Huntingdon attended the incident and arrived to find the minibus was on its side.

Crews used specialist equipment to release 19 casualties and were left in the care of the ambulance services.
