Yes We Cam! Make one small change and help Cambridge Water protect our chalk streams
Cambridgeshire’s chalk streams are under threat. These rare and precious natural habitats need our help. If we work together, can we save our chalk streams and rivers for generations to come? Yes We Cam!
Brought to you by Cambridge Water, Yes We Cam is a powerfully simple initiative. It’s about making one small change to your everyday water habits. By choosing just one easy water-saving pledge, you’ll be a crucial part of our county’s biggest ever water-saving action, protecting and restoring an English habitat as unique as the Amazonian rainforest or Great Barrier Reef.
Our precious chalk streams need your help
Your drinking water – essentially all of the water you use at home, from your taps to toilets – is supplied by local aquifers. These are the same groundwater sources that supply our chalk streams and rivers. These unique habitats, including the Cam, are home to a rich array of native plants and animals, including brown trout, water voles, kingfishers, otters and swans.
There are only around 200 chalk streams in the world, and over a quarter are right here in East Anglia. But these rare habitats are under threat. Climate change and modern water usage are combining to make Greater Cambridge seriously water stressed*. The more we all use, the greater the pressure on our aquifers and chalk streams,
But there’s good news. One small change by each of us is all it takes to make a difference.

One small change is all it takes
All you need to do is make one easy water-saving pledge and stick to it over the next few months. It’s about each of us doing one new thing, as often as possible, until it becomes a new habit.
Make one small change to your everyday water habits and you’ll be part of something much bigger. Because when we work together, we can save, protect and restore our beautiful chalk streams for the future.

What’s Cambridge Water doing to save water?
Saving water isn’t just something Cambridge Water asks its customers to do. The water company is on track to reduce leaks by 15 per cent by 2025, with new, even more ambitious targets to follow. They’ve also made it easy to report leaks online – so if you spot one, let them know!
Get a free leaky loo fix when you pledge
To say thank you for taking a pledge, Cambridge Water is offering free fixes for leaky loos. One in eight toilets has a hidden leak, losing up to 400 litres a day and doubling your water bill. It’s easy to test if yours is one of them.
How to test your loo for a leak
1 Wait at least 30 mins after the last flush.
2 Wipe the back of the pan dry.
3 Pop a dry sheet of tissue on the back on the pan.
4 Come back 3+ hours later. Wet or torn tissue? You have a leaky loo!
