Ade Azeez becomes Cambridge United's sixth summer signing

Striker makes the switch from Partick Thistle

Ade Azeez has become Cambridge United’s sixth signing of the summer.

The 23-year-old striker has moved to the Cambs Glass Stadium on a two-year deal from Partick Thistle for an undisclosed fee.

United fought off competition from other clubs in Sky Bet League Two to secure the services of Azeez, who is described as a quick and powerful striker.

He started his career at Charlton Athletic, signing his first professional contract in 2011 before going on to have loan spells at Wycombe Wanderers, Leyton Orient, Torquay United and Dagenham & Redbridge.

He moved to AFC Wimbledon in 2014, scoring against the U’s at the Cambs Glass Stadium in January 2016, and had an influential role in the club’s promotion to League One, earning the decisive penalty in their play-off final success over Plymouth Argyle.

Azeez made the switch to Partick Thistle last summer, and featured regularly for the SPL side.

“I have driven down from Scotland with a big smile on my face because I’m really excited to move to Cambridge United,” said Azeez.

“There has always been a really good feel about this football club whenever I have played here in the past.

“As soon as I had a conversation with Shaun Derry and other staff from the club, I knew that this was the right place to come.

“I’m quick, play off the shoulder and like to play in behind the defence to cause as many problems as I can. Hopefully I can get a lot of goals for this club.

“I actually scored against Cambridge United the last time I played here, but I’m looking forward to plenty of occasions going forward where I can score at the right end this time!

“I’ve had a few weeks training up in Scotland already, so I’m ready to go and will work hard to be in the right shape for the start of the new season.”

United head coach Shaun Derry said: “We’re delighted to welcome Ade to Cambridge United.

“He’s a player we have been keeping a close eye on for many months now.

“He brings a completely different dimension to our forward options and we’re sure he will thrive in the club’s environment.”
