U's earn Checkatrade Trophy success

Ade Azeez hit a hat-trick as Cambridge United secured a 4-0 win over Southampton under-21s in the Checkatrade Trophy, Southern Group B.

It did not take long for the match to get going as there was a chance for United in only the third minute, with George Taft’s neat cross scuffed over the bar by Greg Taylor.

Southampton responded through Marcus Barnes, who sent a shot just wide.

The breakthrough came in the 16th minute. Southampton defender Tom O’Connor gave away possession to Ade Azeez who burst into the box and was then hauled down by Aarron O’Driscoll.

Azeez took the penalty himself, and tucked it away low to keeper Harry Lewis’ right.

The striker grabbed his second goal of the night in the 37th minute.

A deceptive slide-rule pass by Jevani Brown put Azeez clear in the area, and he made no mistake, firing into the bottom corner.

It was almost 3-0 at half time as Harry Darling had a header from a corner straight at Lewis, but United headed into the break knowing that they had produced a good performance for the first 45 minutes.

They did have their third, however, five minutes into the second half.

David Amoo dug out a cross to the back post and Brown volleyed back across goal and in at the far post.

Amoo almost had a fourth in the 66th minute. He burst into the area and after a good piece of skill fired a low shot to the front post that Lewis did well to keep out.

Azeez went close to completing his hat-trick in the 80th minute, bursting into the box only to be denied by a smart stop at his near post by Lewis.

The hat-trick did arrive for Azeez with two minutes remaining, with an emphatic finish after being set up by Brown.

It was a good performance from the U’s, and will no doubt give them confidence heading into their home league game with MK Dons on Saturday.
