Hefty hits pave the way to success

Cambridge Granta emerged triumphant over Burwell in a high-scoring match in the Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League.

Burwell batted first at Mingay Park, and went about setting a competitive total.

Tom Jagot scored 80 at the top of the innings, and Paul Summerskill’s 58 not out, from 32 balls, including three fours and four sixes, gave them a late boost to reach 286 for 6.

Captain Johnny Atkinson took three valuable wickets for Granta, including the scalp of Jagot.

Opener Ben Claydon and Alex Sears proved to be the bane of Burwell though.

They joined forces on 36, after the dismissal of Dougie Rice, and by the time Sears was out to Jay Ghelani, who took three wickets, for 87, Granta had moved to 191 for 2.

Claydon went on to finish with 79, falling to Josh Arksey, but Atkinson (20 not out) and Tristan Blackledge (5 not out) guided Granta to victory with 290 for 6.

Burwell earned the plaudits in the second team game, beating Granta II by six wickets in the Cambs & Hunts Premier League, Division Two.
