Alice Middleton was gutted for her Cambridge University team-mates after they lost 3-0 to Oxford in the Women's Varsity Match.

The Light Blues skipper saw her team dominate territory and possession but were unable to find a way through the Dark Blues defence.

And so it was Catherine Wilcock’s 15th-minute penalty that decided a thoroughly absorbing match.

“I’m gutted for the girls, but I’m really proud of the shift they put in today,” said Middleton.

“It was those early penalties that mattered in the end, but I felt like it didn’t ever feel like that what was going to coun. I felt like we were going to get a try and kept thinking that throughout.

“I always thought that we had the momentum, we had the strength, we’ve got the finishes but today wasn’t our day.

“We’ve had to adapt to a few last-minute changes, but that’s what you do in sport. We’ve got a really strong depth of squad so I don’t think it should have been the reason that we didn’t get the victory today but they just got the points.

“They still haven’t got a try against us, and like I say, I’m really proud of the girls. It just wasn’t our day.”
