Cambridge City Hockey Club rack up victories during second round of National League and East Hockey League fixtures

Cambridge City are the only side in the England Hockey Women’s Conference Midlands with a 100 per cent winning record after two matches thanks to Saturday’s 3-1 home victory over Bedford.

Despite dominating large parts of the first half, it was not until just before the interval that City got their noses in front through Imogen Callaghan’s first goal of the new campaign.

A maiden National League goal followed for Isla Campbell seven minutes after the restart before Rosabel Clarke fired the ball into the roof of the net with 10 minutes remaining.

Kate Costin did manage to pull one goal back for visiting Bedford in the latter stages, but by that point the damage had long been done.

Elsewhere, it is also two wins from as many outings for Cambridge City II in the East Women’s League Premier Division.

They triumphed 3-0 over Bishop’s Stortford, with the first two goals – scored by Millie Ely and Verity Valentine – set up by some impressive wing play from Emma Bates.

Valentine went on to make sure of the outcome with her second goal of proceedings when she converted a penalty stroke that she had won herself.

In the same division, Cambridge City III are bottom after their 5-1 defeat on the road at Harleston Magpies II.

Becki Wadsworth scored City’s consolation goal via a deflected penalty corner.

Cambridge City IV are one of five teams to have started with back-to-back East Women’s League Division 1 North victories after their 4-1 win at Ipswich & East Suffolk.

Fran Hawkins was the hero in front of goal for newly-promoted City as she helped herself to a hat-trick, with Stephanie Atkins also on target.

Alice Beardmore’s goal was not enough for Cambridge City V to secure the victory in their East Women’s League Division 2 North West clash against Cambridge Nomads.

Beardmore, who joined City from Cambridge University in the summer, broke the deadlock in the second minute.

However, Nomads responded to salvage a 1-1 draw and a share of the spoils.

It was also honours even for Cambridge City VI in their 2-2 draw with Long Sutton in the East Women’s League Division 3 North West.

After falling two goals behind, City restored parity via Natalie Ronco and captain Abbey Richardson.

After an opening day hammering in the England Hockey Men’s Conference Midlands, Cambridge City responded with a 2-2 draw at Harleston Magpies.

Goals from James Pitchford and Will Jones had put City 2-1 in the ascendancy, but the hosts drew level with eight minutes remaining.

In the East Men’s League Division 1 North, Cambridge City II were edged out 3-2 by Harleston Magpies II.

Goals from George Bucknall and Ollie Dalzell provided City with hope, yet an equaliser proved to be elusive.

The inter-club bragging rights went the way of Cambridge City III as they ran out 8-0 winners against Cambridge City IV in an East Men’s League Division 3 North West encounter.

Dimitri Amireh (2), Peter Liddle, Ben Journeaux, Cammy Small, David Gibson, Laurie Humphrey and Tom Liley were all on target.

Meanwhile, the other inter-club fixture between Cambridge City V and Cambridge City VI in the East Men’s League Division 4 North West went the way of the fifth team, who chalked up a 4-1 win.

Charlie Hill, Andy Herriott, Rich Wainwright and Ben Willington netted for the fifth side, while Nick Turner scored for the sixth team.
