Bella Simmons leaves it late to send Cambridge City Ladies into the next round of the SSE Women's FA Cup
Lilywhites fightback to defeat Leyton Orient
Bella Simmons scored a dramatic late winner as Cambridge City Ladies won 5-4 against Leyton Orient in the second qualifying round of the SSE Women’s FA Cup.
Eastern Region Women’s League, Premier Division side City have been in great form but went into the match as underdogs against Women’s National League, South East Division One club Orient.
The visitors settled first and went in front after 10 minutes, doubling their advantage on the half-hour.
City did not drop their heads, and just before half time Laura Mills received the ball wide on the left, cut inside past three challenges and found the back of the net.
After half time, Sarah Mosley found the top corner from the edge of the area to make it 2-2.
Orient restored their lead but City levelled again as Shannon Shaw headed home Charlotte Gillies’ cross.
There was no relent in the scoring, and Orient went back in front, but Mills made it 4-4 with a 25-yard strike.
Then, left-back Lauren Tomlinson burst down the left, and her pin-point low cross was tapped in by Simmons to spark mass celebrations with only minutes remaining.
The Lilywhites sealed the win to earn a third qualifying round tie at Acle on Sunday, October 7.
