Ben Brownlie try hat-trick helps Cambridge defeat Leeds Tykes in National League One

A hat-trick of tries from Ben Brownlie helped to give Cambridge a 38-27 win at Leeds Tykes in National League One.

The well-oiled driving maul machine was in full force in the high-scoring game.

Brownlie pounched for his first try after two minutes, which Harry Johnston converted.

He struck again nine minutes later, and Johnston's extras made it 14-0.

Tighe Maxwell-Whiteley landed a penalty for Leeds, but Brownlie completed his hat-trick and with Johnston landing the conversion, it gave Cambridge a 21-3 lead.

Dom Hardman's converted try for Leeds pegged back the visitors' advantage to 21-10 at half time.

Matt Dawston touched down Cambridge's bonus-point winning try in the 54th minute, with Johnston keeping his 100 per cent record.

But Harry Jukes and Maxwell-Whiteley touched down for Leeds to close the gap to four points.

Joe Green's try for Cambridge reduced the arrears, although Maxwell-Whiteley's penalty took Leeds back within six points of the lead.

However, Jake McCloud's late try secured the win.

Cambridge stay in fourth, nine points behind leaders Caldy.

They are at home to Taunton Titans this Saturday (April 9).
