Cambridge United forward Macauley Bonne looking forward to being reunited with former Charlton Athletic team-mate Lyle Taylor
New Cambridge United player Macauley Bonne is looking forward to rekindling his strike partnership with Lyle Taylor.
Bonne completed his loan switch to the U’s from Sky Bet League Two outfit Gillingham yesterday afternoon in a deadline day deal.
And it is a move that has reunited the two strikers, who scored 11 goals apiece for Charlton Athletic in the Championship during the Covid-impacted 2019/20 season.
“Lyle is very different to me – we’re not the same sort of strikers,” said Bonne, who found the net on five occasions for his parent club this term.
“No disrespect to him, he hasn’t got the legs that he once had, but now he’s got the technical ability.
“Even at Charlton, he’s one of the most technical strikers that I’ve played with and that frees me up, as much as it frees him up too.
“I can run the channels now and he can can go and use his technical ability, get on the ball and turn. Hopefully we can form a good partnership again.”
In terms of the individual qualities that the 28-year-old will provide to United’s attack, Bonne is acutely aware that he is not the most technically gifted attacker.
However, the ex-Queens Park Rangers and Ipswich Town frontman believes that he has plenty of other attributes that will cause problems for opposition defences.
He added: “I wouldn’t say I’m the flair striker that everyone wants, but I’ll give hard work. That’s what I’ve done in my career so far – running, being physical and making the box.
“I’ll give hard work to the fans, to the club and if they can see it working that’s good for me.
“I just enjoy scoring goals. It’s the one thing in my career I’ve done quite well, hopefully people agree with that.
“Hard work, physicality and wanting to win – those are the important things for me.”
