Cambridge United closing in on deal to bring Michael Morrison back to the Abbey Stadium

Head coach Mark Bonner has revealed that Cambridge United are ‘getting closer’ to bringing Michael Morrison back to the club.

Recently-appointed Portsmouth boss John Mousinho confirmed at the weekend that Morrison had reached an agreement to leave Fratton Park and that it was his understanding that he was heading back to the Abbey Stadium, where his professional career started in 2005.

But while the deal is not quite done just yet, Bonner is hopeful that the U’s will be able to provide a positive update ‘very, very soon’.

“It’s getting closer so hopefully we’ll be there quite soon,” he said. “Until that is done I can’t really talk about that. He’s not our player at the moment, (but) certainly one we’re interested in.

“Until it’s done we can’t add to the speculation or the exact news on that so hopefully very, very soon we’ll have some news on that.”

With Morrison potentially on-board in time for Saturday’s Sky Bet League One trip to Lincoln City, he will join Tuesday’s arrival Conor McGrandeles in boosting Bonner’s options for the game.

And the boss is also expecting one more new signing before the transfer window closes on January 31, but that is unlikely to happen until early next week.

“We expect another one before the weekend (Morrison) and then next week we certainly expect one more. Then we’ll see if anything pops up towards the end,” he added.

“I certainly expect in addition to Conor two more throughout the squad between now and the close of the window.

“Hopefully one of those can impact the team this weekend and hopefully the other one won’t be too far behind.”
