Cambridge United head coach Mark Bonner expecting comings and goings during January transfer window
Cambridge United head coach Mark Bonner is expecting the club to be ‘active’ during the upcoming January transfer window.
During the previous winter transfer period the U’s were highly active as they fought to preserve their Sky Bet League One status. George Thomas, Michael Morrison and Ryan Bennett all signed permanent deals, while Conor McGrandles and Steve Seddon both arrived on loan.
This time around Bonner is hopeful that it will prove to be a calmer month, although he is nevertheless anticipating both comings and goings.
He said: “Active is probably fair, but how active I don’t know. It’s a window that can be difficult but I expect both – I expect some to come and some to go.
“Some (to go) just because they need games and haven’t had them and we’ve got loans that are ending, we’ve got boys out on loan.
“There will be a bit going on but we won’t be the biggest spenders in the league come January. If we can come out of the window stronger, I think that’s everybody’s aim all of the time.
“Last January was a big window for us – we did a lot. We over-invested really and what we hope is that we’re in a decent position come the turn of the year so we’re not desperate to do lots.
“We’ve got the nucleas of a really good squad but we need it topping up a little bit in a few areas. Hopefully we can do that and one or two get the opportunities to play elsewhere.
“We’ll have to be clever with how we manoeuvre players around a little bit but I expect a little bit of movement. I wouldn’t expect it on January 1 or 2 and I wouldn’t expect us to be the big spenders in this window in the league – they’ll be plenty of others doing that.
“If we can do a little bit to make ourselves stronger in that month we’ll try to do it.”
