Cambridge United head coach Garry Monk dismisses possibility of signing free agents
Head coach Garry Monk has ruled out the prospect of Cambridge United delving into the free agent market.
While the summer transfer window closed for business at the end of last month, teams are still able to add unattached players to their squads – a route that a number of Sky Bet League One and Two clubs have gone down in recent days.
However, Monk has revealed that the U’s do not have the financial capabilities to make any further additions.
He said: “As a manager you want as much quality as you can get but I don’t think we have that possibility.
“I’ve said it all along, I’m just focused on what I have. Even when the window is open there are loads of conversations going on, I’m always just focused on what I have and the reality of what we can do.”
In total, Monk’s options were furnished with 12 new additions over the course of the summer. And in the main the boss was pleased with how the process unfolded.
He added: “The market we were in and what we were doing, we were all fully versed on what we can and can’t do.
“For the majority of it we did as good as we could. Sat here as a coach you want more and as much as quality as you can, but in terms of the process and how that works here and the alignment of it all, it was excellent. Everyone worked extremely hard.
“As we’ve said we went for targets that we didn’t get and others came into play late on, but the majority of it we’ve done as best we can and everyone has worked hard to do that.
“Overall we’ve got the majority right and as soon as that (the window) closes it is what it is.”
