Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Jensen Weir helps Cambridge United back to winning ways against AFC Wimbledon with first senior goal

Cambridge United got back to winning ways with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at home to AFC Wimbledon.

Brighton & Hove Albion loanee Jensen Weir got the only goal of the game at the Abbey Stadium - his first senior goal in the professional game - as he was handed a start by head coach Mark Bonner.

Injury to Liam O’Neil and a suspension for Adam May paved the way for Weir to step up, but he has already shown promise in previous outings and looked an assured presence throughout.

His goal came early in the second half. Following pressure on the Dons’ defence by Joe Ironside, Weir found the back of the net with a looping header.

The U’s started both halves well, with Shillow Tracey probing down the left in the first half and the right after the break.

They could have taken an early lead through Wes Hoolahan, but he saw his close-range header go wide.

Wimbledon struggled to find their rhythm in the first half, but it took a good save from emergency Ipswich loanee Tomas Holy to steer away Jack Rudoni’s header close to the break.

The visitors managed some spells of pressure in the second half, and could have earned a point had Rudoni not nodded Nesta Guinness-Walker’s pinpoint cross straight into the gloves of Holy late-on.

But overall, it was a deserved win for the U’s - and their first league clean sheet for two months.

“We’re in a good position - not being defeated in consecutive games with a new team at a new level and bang on track for where we need to be,” said Bonner afterwards.

“We’re learning, getting better all the time and with an unbelievable spirit as a group of people which is something we should cherish and hold on to.

“We’re not going to have easy games at this level and we’re going to have to work incredibly hard to get our wins and get our points.”

United moved up to 15th, with 19 points, ahead of their visitors, who lie in 17th with 17 points after Saturday’s game. The U’s, who are level on points with Bolton ahead of them, but have a game in hand, travel to 19th-placed Morecambe on Tuesday night for a 7.45pm kick-off.
