Men's eight are fastest on the river

Cambridge 99 Rowing Club’s men’s eight have retained the coveted Head of the Cam trophy.

The first crew won the trophy as fastest on the river in 2017, and were determined to maintain the honour in the face of fierce competition from Clare and Downing Colleges.

The crew of Karel Kabelik, Rob Sargent, Alex Shaw, Will Young, Rhidian Maltby, Friso van Gent, Nick Thorn, Matt Moore and cox Sammi Tarling completed the 2.6km upstream course in nine minutes flat.

There were further victories for Cambridge 99 as Richard Reumerman and Francisco Duarte won the coxless pairs in 10min 41sec before joining up with Richard Meadows, Iolo Squires and cox Jonathan Anderson to win the coxed fours, also in 10.41.

Sara Bastiani and Valentina Futoryanova were first in the women’s double sculls in 12.01, 30 seconds clear of their nearest rivals, who were from Loughborough.

The results proved to be an outstanding start to the summer rowing season for Cambridge 99, and next stop will be the Wallingford Regatta.

Town and gown will clash again on the Cam in the annual Nines Spring Regatta on Saturday, May 27.
