Lilywhites have mixed results on long weekend

Tom Knowles’ penalty saw Cambridge City wrap up a 4-1 win over Bedford in Evo-Stik League South East Division on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Lilywhites’ first game of the long weekend on Saturday ended with a 2-1 home defeat to Beaconsfield Town, who scored two first-half goals in three minutes before Knowles pulled one back from the spot in the second half.

But they bounced back in style at Bedford on Monday.

They went ahead through Ryan Sharman’s third-minute penalty, but Bedford were on level terms just over 20 minutes later through James Peters.

City regained the lead through Salim Relizani on the angle just before half time.

And they secured the win thanks to two goals in the last 15 minutes, first Jordan Gent’s header and then Knowles’ penalty, after Ian Miller had been fouled.

City are next in action on Friday (September 1) night, when they host St Neots Town in the FA Cup, first qualifying round.
