Cambridge City lift Cambs Invitation Cup with victory over Ely City
Dominant Lilywhites too good for Robins
Cambridge City stretched their winning run to seven games as they lifted the Cambs Invitation Cup by beating Ely City 4-1 at the Cambs Glass Stadium.
Two divisions separated the sides, and City were dominant from the off, with Lee Stevenson, Darren Foxley and Victor Garcia all having efforts off target.
After having the bulk of the possession, the deadlock was broken in the 38th minute.
Manny Osei’s pace saw him get in behind the back four, and he clipped an effort over advancing Ely keeper Harry Reynolds that hit the post, but the ball came out to Harry Norman, who drilled the ball back in.
And despite Ollie Brookes’ best efforts to clear, it hit the bar and bounced down and was deemed to have crossed the line despite being cleared.
City doubled their lead before the break as Osei did really well in the box, getting to the by-line and then squaring the ball for Norman, who finished really well with the outside of his foot.
Matt Foy got the third from the edge of the box, curling a low shot from the left past Reynolds at the start of the second half.
Ely became more of a force in the match and after getting their eye in with a couple of efforts, pulled a goal back in the 68th minute.
Jamie Alsop’s free kick was flicked on by Tom Williams and Ashley Walter headed past City keeper Dean Snedker – the first goal that the Lilywhites had conceded in seven games.
City had the chance to restore their three-goal advantage after Brookes brought down Osei in the area, but the striker blazed the resulting penalty over the bar.
However, the final seal on the match for City was applied by Josh Lowe, who finished off after great work by Darren Foxley on the left.
