Cambridge City suffer League Cup knockout

By CambridgeIndependent Reporter

Disappointing end to a great year for the Lilywhites

Cambridge City saw their 2017 campaign end with a 3-1 defeat to Bedford in the East Region Women’s Football League Cup.

City had good opportunities through Carla Penny and Bella Simmons, but the deadlock was eventually broken from close range by Bedford.

City were spurred into action, and Simmons’ persistent play was rewarded with the equaliser.

Bedford regained the lead after the break, and as the Lilywhites searched for an equaliser, Bedford broke to earn a penalty after a foul by Lolly Tomlinson. And they converted the spot kick.

So it was a disappointing end to an otherwise successful year, which saw City promoted from the First Division and sees them top the Premier League now.

Issy Bryant scored five goals and Aino Turunen got one as Cambridge City beat March Soccer School in the quarter-finals of the Under-15s League Cup.

A hat-trick from Niamh Davies, two from Amie Fullwood and one apiece from Maddie McInnes and Millie Clarke earned Cambridge City under-14s a 7-0 win at Hungate Rovers in the league.
