Richie Williams has signed a new contract at Cambridge Rugby Club.

The director of rugby has extended his stay at Volac Park to the end of the 2022/23 campaign, after what has been a difficult 18 months with no National League rugby since the start of the pandemic in March 2020.

Cambridge chairman Rob Dean said: “I am very pleased that Richie will continue with us as director of rugby at Volac Park. Richie has impressed over the last year with his commitment to the club despite the fact there has not been any action on the pitch.

“His focus on our community programme has gained recognition outside of the club and the development of young players through our Vipers Academy is starting to produce players who have the potential to thrive in adult rugby.

“I am very much looking forward to the 2021/22 season and seeing the exciting squad Richie has been ‘nurturing’ since April last year showing our supporters what they can achieve.”

Williams, who took over from Ross Stewart in the summer of 2018, said: “I am really pleased to continue in my role as DoR at Cambridge RUFC and extend my contract for another two seasons. I am grateful for the club’s support during a difficult 18-month period and enthused to support the continued growth on and off the field.

“I am particularly motivated by the imminent return to competitive rugby and excited to see some tangible developments within our coaching and playing pathway. There is huge potential here and we are slowly starting to see the benefits of a connected and aligned club.”
