Two athletes with connections to Cambridge have been selected as part of the Great Britain squad for the upcoming European Rowing Championships.

The meeting, which will take place in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, from 29 May to 1 June, marks the start of a new Olympic cycle with the next Games due to take place in Los Angeles in 2028.

Freya Keto, who was part of the Cambridge University Boat Club Women’s crew that won the Boat Race two years ago, is among the list of 39 rowers that has made the cut.

Washington DC-born Keto will take part in the women’s double sculls alongside Vwairé Obukohwo, who is a member of Twickenham Rowing Club.

And Keto has been joined in the group by City of Cambridge Rowing Club’s Jamie Gare – a previous winner at Holland Beker, Duisburg and the Henley Royal Regatta.

Haverhill-raised Gare will partner Tobias Schröder in the men’s double sculls.

Louise Kingsley, British Rowing’s director of performance said: “The start of the new cycle is an exciting time, with a mix of familiar faces and new crews taking to the start line in Plovidiv.

“We have returning Olympic and Paralympic champions, as well as World, Olympic and Paralympic medallists in the squad.

“Plus, we welcome the new group of ‘Project LA’ athletes, many of whom have had medal success at Under-23 level and made their senior debuts at World Rowing Cup 3 in 2024.

“After a long winter of training, I know everyone is keen to get their season under way and see how we perform against the rest of Europe.”
