Richie Williams saluted the character of Cambridge as they signed off for 2018 with a 25-22 win over Loughborough Students in National League One.

Two tries from Oli Petrides, one from Ean Griffiths and 10 points from the boot of Ben Penfold secured the win against a spirited Students’ side who fought to the last.

It meant Cambridge chalked up what has been an all too rare home win, and head coach Richie Williams said: “We spoke a lot in the week about putting a performance together that was better than the previous two weeks, and probably at times we did that.

“I think that first 15 minutes was a lot better rugby than we have produced all season. We let Loughborough back into the game and in the second half we gave them a little bit too much space to attack from and again that coupled with some of our indiscipline made it very difficult.

“I thought the boys character showed through at the end there, and it was really important to get four points going into Christmas, which will hopefully move us a bit further up the table.”
