Cambridge Rugby Club prepared for Doncaster Knights challenge after recording first RFU Championship victory over Caldy
While he is aware of the size of the task in hand, Richie Williams believes that his Cambridge side will be well prepared for the threats posed by this weekend’s hosts Doncaster Knights.
Cambridge have already been soundly beaten on two occasions by the Knights this term, first in the Premiership Cup and then in the RFU Championship.
However, Cambridge will go into the reverse league fixture at Castle Park on Saturday (3 February) buoyed by having recorded their first ever second-tier victory at home last weekend against Caldy.
The director of rugby told the Richie & Jacko Podcast: “That will be a huge test next week. We know what Doncaster’s strength are.
“They’re a very direct and physical team. When we played them at home at the start of the season they taught us a lesson on how to play direct rugby.
“We know what’s coming but we’re far better prepared now then what we were at the start of the season.
“The confidence that we’ve got (from beating Caldy) will hopefully put us in a really good position.”
On the win over Caldy, which moved Cambridge off the foot of the table, Williams added: “That’s a bit of history that’s been made with our first home win. It’s taken longer than we would have liked (to win at home) but I’m delighted for the players.
“When we won that London Scottish game we felt we’d turned a massive corner in the league.
“We’ve become acclimatised to what we need to do to be successful and what we saw in the second 40 minutes was the discipline and the control and the conviction when we got the opportunities.
“We trained Tuesday and Thursday in the week and it’s probably the best sessions we’ve had all season. We were able to transfer a lot of that into the game.
“I’m so pleased to get five points and restricting them to nothing is a bonus.”
