Abi Markillie and Jessie Owers touched down two tries apiece as Cambridge Rubies secured a 25-24 win over Harwich & Dovercourt in the National Girls’ Under-15 Cup.

Cambridge made a bright start, recycling the ball for Owers to break before passing to Holly McClean. She was tackled just short of the line, but a quick tap penalty from Annabelle Sandercock set up Markillie to score.

From the restart, Owers sprinted clear from her own 22 to score.

Harwich touched down a well-taken try down the left, but Rubies responded as good Cambridge defence turned over possession and got the ball to Markillie to touch down.

The visitors got the final converted try of the half to make it 15-12.

Determined defence was keeping Harwich at bay, with strong tackling from Bibi White and Lauren Russell.

Harwich eventually broke clear to get a well-taken try.

The Rubies replied as Emily Hay made a determined break to finish in the corner and, soon after, scrum-half Owers skipped through a gap to touch down for an eight-point lead.

Harwich got to within a point with a converted try minutes from time, but Cambridge held on for the victory.

The win was the Rubies’ first in the a National Cup, and was added to as the under-18s defeated Ampthill 17-12.
