Cambridge Rugby Club head into new RFU Championship season with final friendly victory over Aberavon

Louis Grimoldby believes that Cambridge took a ‘step forward in the right direction’ during their final pre-season friendly of the summer.

Cambridge ran out 35-21 winners from Saturday’s clash away at Welsh outfit Aberavon in what was their last fixture before running out on the opening weekend of the new RFU Championship season against Chinnor on 21 September.

And new signing Grimoldby was pleased with the response to the previous outing versus Cardiff, which ended in a 14-12 defeat.

“It was a step forward in the right direction,” he said. “To go and score 35 points away from home, 28 of those during the first half, was really, really pleasing.

“There’s still loads of stuff to work on, but the main thing is we’re starting to move forward and we’re starting to put things right from last weekend.

“We’ve got two weeks now to build into that first Championship game.”

The fly-half is also confident that the large number of additions at Volac Park will help to ensure that there is improvement upon the previous campaign’s bottom place finish.

He added: “Obviously there’s no doubting the fact that last year was disappointing and there’s plenty of stuff to work on.

“But we’ve got lots of new players, a good bunch of boys willing to work hard and we will do better than last season.

“Let’s take one game at a time and see where we end up.”
