Cambridge Rugby Club slip to bottom of RFU Championship table after 41-27 defeat to Caldy at Ellgia Fields

Cambridge dropped to the bottom of the RFU Championship table following Saturday’s 41-27 home defeat to Caldy.

The visitors headed into the contest rooted to the foot of the standings, but their first away victory of the season has lifted them above Cambridge and opened up a two-point gap between the sides.

The contest was nicely poised when Cambridge’s Matt Hema went over in the corner to reduce the arrears to 29-27 with a shade less than 20 minutes remaining, only for Caldy to take the game away with a pair of tries.

“We were chasing the game because we were behind then one little slip and the game is done,” said Cambridge’s interim head coach Anthony Allen.

“We’ll look back more at what happened before then. We want to be in a position where we’re in the lead going into the end, not chasing it.

“We did some ok things, but our discipline and some real simple stuff is where we let ourselves down individually and that just gave them a platform to get into the game and do what they do.

“It’s not about going for the losing bonus point or the four tries (bonus point), we’ve got to be in positions and do better earlier in games.

“We’ve improved in what we’re trying to do but it’s not quite there yet.”

Cambridge now have a long break from league action until 22 March when they will travel to third-placed Coventry.
