Cambridge South Ladies’ I captain calls for more goals in this season's East Women’s League Division 1 North

The challenge for Cambridge South Ladies’ I is to score more goals this season.

While they finished a highly respectable third in the East Women’s League Division 1 North last season, South found the back of the net on just 42 occasions from 22 matches.

In contrast champions Bury St Edmunds I smashed in 96 goals while second-placed Cambridge City III scored 62.

Captain Jenny Soderman said: “Last season we won a lot of games by just one or two goals but it meant we weren’t always feeling comfortable.

“We’ve got a few new players in our frontline and hopefully they can help us to score more goals because that’s what we’ll need to do to improve upon where we finished last season.

“That’s the target, to at least match what we did last season but hopefully finish higher.”

The 2022/23 season will mark a first for Soderman as skipper of the team, and it is a responsibility that she is already enjoying.

“It’s going great. I love the organisational side of things and bringing people together,” she added.

“Hopefully that can all be reflected in the hockey that we play.

“I’ve got a vice-captain with a great hockey brain and hopefully we can put together an enjoyable season for the whole team.”

South get the new campaign under way on Saturday (September 24) when they travel into Norfolk to lock horns with Norwich City II.
