Cambridge South Men's first team pick up first victory of new season
Cambridge South are off the mark in the East Men’s League Division 1N courtesy of Saturday’s 2-1 win over Cambridge University II.
South dominated early on but soon found themselves a goal behind to a deflection.
Oscar Serra scored from a rebound to level up the scoreline before the break, but despite plenty of pressure after the restart it appeared they would have to settle for a draw.
However, with just a couple of seconds remaining Ed Doust popped up to score the winning goal from a penalty corner.
In the East Men’s League Division 2NW, Cambridge South II suffered a 1-0 defeat at Cambridge University III.
The students’ match-winning goal came against the run of play after South had spurned a number of chances.
Cambridge South III dished out a 7-0 thrashing to Bourne Deeping II in the East Men’s League Division 3NW.
Joe Whittaker spearheaded South’s charge with a hat-trick to move joint top of the men’s scoring charts.
Player-coach George Anderson weighed in with a brace, while Jack Chalk and James Menzies also got in on the scoring act.
There was a big contrast in fortunes for Cambridge IV in the East Men’s League Division 3NW as they suffered a 14-0 loss at March Town I.
In the East Men’s League Division 4NW, Cambridge South V ran out 5-0 winners at St Neots III.
Rob Barton put South one goal up at the break before Nevin Warren (2), Stuart Creed and captain Jo Dant made sure of the outcome after the restart.
Meanwhile, Cambridge South III suffered a 3-0 home defeat to St Neots IV in the East Men’s League Division 5NW.
In the East Women’s League Division 1N, Cambridge South suffered a 3-2 defeat at home to Norwich Dragons I in the battle of the teams in third and fourth.
After falling behind South responded when Katie Mulholland’s penalty corner was swept to the near post for Jess Read to deflect home.
However, the Dragons scored twice more in the second half, which in turn rendered Izzy MacDonald-Parry’s late penalty stroke a consolation.
Goals from Maddie Twyning and Juilette Stoop could not prevent Cambridge South II from losing their East Women’s League Divsion 2NW clash 3-2 at Cambridge University III, while Cambridge South III went down 4-1 to Bourne Deeping I in the East Women’s League Division 2NW.
In the East Women’s League Division 3NW, Cambridge South IV racked up a 9-1 win at Bourne Deeping II. Charlotte Moyns and Lily Matthews scored hat-tricks along with goals from Connie Piper (2) and Catriona West.
Cambridge South V ran out 3-1 winners against Haverhill I in the East Women’s League Division 4NW with goals from Nicky Perry, Emma Moore and Kathryn-Ann Masters, while Pedzisai Gororo (2), Nicky Simler, Eleanor Moffitt and Charlotte Greenwood scored in Cambridge South VI’s 5-3 win against Pelicans III.
