Cambridge slip to hefty RFU Championship defeat on the road at Ealing Trailfinders
Cambridge’s tough start to life in the RFU Championship continued on Saturday with a hefty 64-7 defeat at Ealing Trailfinders.
The hosting Trailfinders, who are widely regarded to be among this season’s title favourites, ran in 10 tries at the Sports Ground.
Five of those came before the newly-promoted visitors troubled the scoreboard for the one and only time via Elias Caven’s try, which was successfully converted by young fly-half Jamie Benson.
The writing was on the wall for Cambridge as early as the fourth minute when Andrew Davidson dotted down.
Ryan Smid, William Montgomery, Richard Hardwick and Matthew Cornish also all got their names on the try sheet before the half-time whistle, while Craig Willis converted three of those.
Caven went over for Cambridge in the 44th minute, but normal service was soon resumed with two quickfire tries from Ealing’s Samuel Uzokwe. Montgomery and Hardwick also completed their braces before the final whistle, with Michael Willemse also getting on the act.
Cambridge are next in action on November 18 at home versus Hartpury.
