Colin Calderwood wants Cambridge United to prove that their midweek win over Bury was not a freak result.

The U’s produced an impressive display to win 3-0 at promotion-chasing Bury in Sky Bet League Two, but the challenge gets no easier, with a trip to fourth-placed Mansfield Town on Saturday.

The game at the One Call Stadium is United’s third match in eight days against promotion hopefuls, with the run starting with a 1-0 home defeat to Colchester United.

“The midweek was very good,” said U’s head coach Calderwood. “The players had to focus on Tuesday very quickly after Saturday, and I think the same is exactly true now.

“We want to enjoy the fact we’ve won and played at a good level but certainly try to repeat the result.

“We’ve got to look to win another game and I think that’s another important factor to back-up an impressive result with another impressive result.

“And it will be an impressive one if we can go to Mansfield and take a victory.

“They are in the top four in the league with their home record, I think. They are both very strong, both challenging for automatic promotion and to have them together in a week made it a tough week.

“As we approached Monday it looked quite daunting but the way the lads went about their job and got the job done on Tuesday really has helped a lot in the perception of where we are.

“It’s a slightly different test so if they think it’s the summit of what they can achieve I want to prove to them that it’s not and that they’ve got to repeat it and run as hard as they did the other night.”

United’s win over Bury has seen them move nine points clear of the relegation places, with six matches left to play.

“We want another victory because one more quickly would be quite decisive in where we end up at the end of the season,” said Calderwood.

“This week, with three games coming quite quickly, we felt it was a big week that we had to take points out of.

“We have done that, but we want a bit more. If you can have victories and points, the added bonus is that it’s knocking off games.”
