Cambridge United signed off their season at the Abbey Stadium with a 2-1 defeat to Morecambe in Sky Bet League Two.

United made a bright opening with the lively Hayden Coulson getting a chance inside the area, but the effort with the outside of his boot hit the bar.

Five minutes later, however, Morecambe took the lead. A header back across from a corner found Aaron Collins unmarked to turn home from close range.

The hosts were just struggling to get into any sort of rhythm, and Steven Old should have doubled Morecambe’s lead from another corner after 15 minutes, firing over when well placed.

Jordan Cranston hit a 40-yard free kick and, with the help of the wind, it went narrowly wide.

Paul Lewis had a half chance for United in the 32nd minute, but his 20-yard shot was easily held by Morecambe keeper Mark Halstead.

The midfielder then side-footed an effort wide from a corner.

United had a chance to equalise in the 41st minute.

Old seemed to be shepherding Jevani Brown out of the area with ease but, for some reason, decided to lunge in to take down the United forward.

However, Brown’s resulting penalty was somewhat tame and saved low to his left by Halstead.

The half finished as it started, with bright spark Coulson cutting in from the right and curling an effort just wide.

United went in search of the equaliser, but not before Cranston had the first opening for Morecambe, although Dimi Mitov made a simple save.

The U’s got better as the half wore on, with Lewis denied from a corner at the back post.

Brown then let fly from 25 yards, but the shot drifted wide.

A strange decision was made in the 71st minute as Coulson’s shot from the edge of the area was deflected wide, but a goal kick was awarded.

Mitov made a smart stop to deny Cranston’s fierce drive in the 81st minute, and United almost had an equaliser six minutes later.

Jabo Ibehre’s header back across goal fell to David Amoo, who flicked at the shot but it was cleared off the line by Alex Kenyon.

To make matters worse, Morecambe broke up the other end and Cranston sprung the offside trap to go clear through and calmly finish past Mitov.

Substitute Tom Knowles did sign off on a personal high, curling a 25-yard free kick low into the bottom corner for his first competitive goal for the U’s.

But it turned out to be a disappointing conclusion at home to a difficult season.
