Cambridge United’s key clash against Morecambe postponed after high winds damage roof at Abbey Stadium
Saturday’s match between Cambridge United and Morecambe has been postponed after severe winds overnight caused extensive damage to the roof of the main stand at the Abbey Stadium.
The U’s said it was instructed to call off its crunch home game in Sky Bet League One by the local Safety Advisory Group.
In a statement, the club said: “Whilst the postponement comes as an immense disappointment, the decision has been made with supporter safety in mind.
“The club apologises for the inconvenience caused and will advise supporters in due course with regards to the rearranged date.
“Pre-purchased tickets for the game will remain valid for the rearranged fixture. Alternatively, supporters can request a refund - once the new date has been confirmed - by contacting the ticket office.”
United issued pictures showing some of the damage caused to the roof.
A run of one win from their last nine league games has left the U's in 20th in the table, just one place and two points above the relegation zone.
Morecambe sit a place above them after winning their last three games to climb out of the bottom four.
United said it would issue an update on the status of Thursday’s FA Youth Cup tie next week.
