Two goals in each half as U's are beaten at the Abbey

Cambridge United have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup after being beaten in the first round 4-1 by Newport County at the Abbey Stadium.

Two goals from Padraig Amond, a header from Jamille Matt and one from Antoine Semenyo did the damage before Ade Azeez grabbed a late penalty for the U’s.

It was not the best of first halves for the U’s.

In a rather tepid opening, Newport created the greater number of chances.

Jamille Matt had an effort straight at Dimitar Mitvo and then Tyreeq Bakinson blazed over the bar.

The deadlock was broken in the 18th minute when a long ball led to Padraig Amond outpacing the defence to fire in at the near post.

Matt shot straight at Mitov from the edge of the area in the 20th minute, but two minutes later, Newport doubled their lead.

After a fine-flowing move, a slight error have gave an unmarked Amond the chance to slot home.

Amond nearly had his hat-trick in the 26th minute, with Mitov having to be alert to save low down to turn the ball round the post.

Matt did well to set up a chance for Bakinson in the 34th minute, but his effort went narrowly wide.

Things got even harder at the start of the second period.

A deep free kick was taken to the back post by Matt Dolan, and Matt rose highest to loop a header back across goal and over Mitov into the far post.

In the 62nd minute, Tyler Hornby-Forbes had a dipping effort turned round the post low by Mitov, and Matt headed the resulting corner over the bar.

United, who had appeals for a penalty turned down earlier in the half, fashioned a half chance in the 66th minute, with Azeez’s cross being headed over by Emmanuel Osadebe.

George Maris then fired off target from about 25 yards.

United were having the greater share of territory, with Maris’ shot saved low by Nick Townsend and then some neat build-up play seeing Azeez getting a shot away that was also thwarted by the keeper.

A mix-up in possession resulted in Newport’s fourth goal in the 86th minute, with Semenyo firing a neat shot on the diagonal into the bottom corner.

United grabbed a consolation goal in the 90th minute.

Jake Carroll was fouled in the box and Azeez stepped up to calmly stroke home the penalty.
