Cambridge Cangaroos impress at the National Age Group Championships in Telford

Cambridge Cangaroos enjoyed a successful time at last weekend’s National Age Group Championships in Telford.

The club, which was formed back in 2004, took five of its members to the event and saw one secure themselves a place at the British Championships later this year, with two more also standing a good chance of participating.

Nicola Bannister was the athlete to rubber stamp her place in Birmingham in September thanks to her display in the Disability Performance Category 2 Women’s 15+ group.

Bannister successfully completed her first exercise, but an error in the second meant some improvisation was needed and although she completed the 10 skills, the execution and difficulty was not as high as planned. This resulted in Bannister placing fourth with a score of 52.600, yet while there was no medal, she securely qualified for the British Championships.

And it is hoped that she will be joined at the competition by club-mates Sara Shaw and Lucas Coleman-Denny, who are waiting to learn if their rankings are high enough after impressive performances.

Shaw was competing in her first ever competition in the United Kingdom as she lives in Singapore, but trains with the Cangaroos during the summer while visiting family.

She finished 10th out of 46 gymnasts in the Women’s FIG 13-14 age group with a score of 85.140, while Coleman-Denny finished fourth in the Men’s FIG 9-10 age group.

Coleman-Denny was fifth after the first round and jumped up to third after the second routine before ending up just outside the medals.

At the same competition, the Cangaroos’ Freya Carter showed improvement in her second excercise to finish 17th in the Women’s FIG 9-10 age group and Lilia Kearney was 23rd in the Women’s FIG 15-16 age group.
